I designed Unique Filer because I have a fairly large image collection, and I KNEW that I had LOTS of duplicates.
I tried searching by filename, but that didn't help much. I then tried sorting my folders by filesize, and looking for duplicates (That doesn't work too well when you have thousands of images in hundreds of folders).
I wrote Unique Filer as a personal utility to do those two searches for me automatically, but I was suprised to see that there weren't too many EXACT duplicates. Most had been resized, saved at lower resolution, been color corrected, or had someone put their tag on it. I needed something to find these files too.
Then I came up with the FUZZ Factor. The program actually "Looks" at the images, remembers them, and is smart enough to find images that are similar to it. Admitedly, the FUZZ Factor does make mistakes (some real doozeys at times), but it's correct more often than it's wrong. The first time that I ran it on my system of 17,508 files (over a gig) spanning two hard drives and over 250 folders, it turned up 23 mistaken matches, and over 1000 TRUE duplicate files. I freed up almost 100 meg of space, and I improved a few collections with better resolution images.
For this screenshot, I made these 4 unique images...
The Original image, one with a Spam Tag on it, one that was Color Corrected, and one that was scaled down.
I gave them each a unique filename, and split them into two folders. I then added 500 images to the first folder, and the same 500 images to the second folder.
Then I did a Fuzzy Scan...
And these are the Results...
Unique Filer Found them all in under 3 minutes, and it works even better with larger Photographic images. You will notice that there were some errors... There were a total of 6 mistaken matches of images that were almost identical... Not bad on a scan of over 1000 images :)
